This is the August thread for suggesting new FAQs, suggesting changes to existing FAQs, posting errors in existing FAQs, and for changes to/additions to/errors in site copy which is not FAQs.

Email posting FAQ. With instructions and also link to http://www.dreamwidth.org/tools/recent_emailposts for troubleshooting (which should possibly also be linked from the /manage/settings/?cat=mobile page)... I eventually found it by going to LJ's FAQ and hunting the information down, which is Not Good.

I'd like to see a separate page that describes the new <user> tag, with lots of synonyms and things people might search on, like "lj-user" and "new syntax" and "tag" and so on.

And using Sphinx to index and search the FAQs would be great, now it's a string match and so if you search for two words, but in the wrong order, they just don't come up. Would be a good way to slowly ramp up Sphinx and make sure it scales.

The end of "Free accounts can vote in polls but can only create polls in a paid community if they maintain it" is no longer true. See http://dw-news.dreamwidth.org/9143.html: "With our last code push, free users are also now able to post polls into paid communities. The poll creator doesn't recognize this (it will in the future), but if you manually write the poll code or ask a friend to create the poll code for you, you'll be able to post a poll in a community as long as the community itself is paid."

It needs to be edited as well. From "Ability to create polls: N" to "Ability to create polls: limited" I guess.

IP-ban for failed logins

I know the IP-ban time limit needs to be kept secret for security reasons. Is it worth putting this into a FAQ, explaining that it's for security reasons, as we keep getting the question in Support?

Also, would it be okay to specify an extreme upper limit, so people know? (i.e. I'm pretty sure the length of time is less than a week, so could that be specified even if giving the exact number of hours is a security risk?)

Admin console

I'd heard people mention the admin console before but didn't know what it was. A FAQ search produced a FAQ on feeds, which linked to it, and the console itself had a link to a reference guide. However, is it worth having a FAQ explaining what it is and what it's used for?

Or, given that I vaguely remember muttering about plans to phase it out, is there a list anywhere of things that can only be done via the console, that aren't also linked elsewhere? (Possibly that's a question for the wiki or bugzilla/devs rather than docs, in which case do say so and I'll go ask someone else.)

I just read the manage communities FAQ and I have no idea what the difference between an administrator and a moderator is. Is the difference important? How do I make someone a moderator? (I'm the sole administrator for two comms, but I'm not listed as a moderator for either….)

Looking at http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=153, I had two thoughts:

1: Should this be split into two FAQs for the two separate questions? I'm usually looking at the second question, and scrolling is annoying.

2: Is there a neat way to distinguish features for paid *journals* from features for paid *communities*? Obviously some are the same, but some of those features are only applicable to journals, and it would be good to make it clearer why it's worth paying for each type, since the reasons are often different - having more icons doesn't mean much to a community.

This would be ... difficult at best, but maybe for Transmogrified, since it's the default style, I think?

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I've noticed that the case of FAQ titles is inconsistent. Most of them use sentence case, some use start case (How Do I Make A Link To Another Dreamwidth Account?), and some use a mixture of start case and title case (How Do I Set Age Restriction Filters on my Journal or Entry?).

I don't know if this is maybe something being worked on over time, but thought I'd mention it.

Invite codes email

The "your request for invite codes has been granted" email apparently just has a link to manage/invitecodes; it doesn't have the codes in the email. I'd suggest putting the codes in the email itself, as for the normal invite code granting email, unless the number of codes is more than, say, 20.

It doesn't appear to have the usual footer, either.

(This is testing on my Dreamhack - I haven't had the email on the main site to compare, but I would guess this is one of those things where the docs stuff is in the code. Anyway, do say if you think this should go through dw_suggestions instead.)
