This is the August thread for suggesting new FAQs, suggesting changes to existing FAQs, posting errors in existing FAQs, and for changes to/additions to/errors in site copy which is not FAQs.

Admin console

I'd heard people mention the admin console before but didn't know what it was. A FAQ search produced a FAQ on feeds, which linked to it, and the console itself had a link to a reference guide. However, is it worth having a FAQ explaining what it is and what it's used for?

Or, given that I vaguely remember muttering about plans to phase it out, is there a list anywhere of things that can only be done via the console, that aren't also linked elsewhere? (Possibly that's a question for the wiki or bugzilla/devs rather than docs, in which case do say so and I'll go ask someone else.)

erm... i vaguely recall a mention that a lot of Console functions were going to be moved to a more user-friendly venue than Console, which is truly a PITA, but I have no updated information on this.

I *THINK* this would begin as a devs question: what current Console-dependent features are you moving, and when, and when you're done will DW members need to use Console at all?

After that ... to the FAQmobile!

Let me know if you're going to take it up with devs, or if I should figure out where to poke.

I don't think there are plans to phase out the console--it makes it really easy to copy/paste a long series of commands that would be hell to do by hand through the inferface. The console was actually upgraded to use the site scheme; I don't think that would have happened if the plan was just to phase it out. I think the plan was to make sure that options that people needed were accessible through the interface, so they wouldn't have to use the console.
