New FAQs:

* What extra services can communities benefit from? in Your Account

* What is the difference between my journal style and the site skin? in Your Account

As always, I proofread carefully, which means there are at least four spelling errors lurking. If you spot a problem, holler.

Dear Denise, I am your greatest fan, but: you have the ability to entirely customize your journal using the S2 programming language, which is based on CSS code is really really confusing, and goodness knows we already have enough users confused by S2. S2 =/= CSS!

I would say: You have the ability to completely customize your journal using CSS. Advanced users can use the S2 programming language to design the whole journal from scratch.

And boy do we ever need better documentation of the style system... I feel horribly guilty here cos it was sort of my job, 18 months ago, and I've neglected it rather.

First one: I don't know if this on purpose but the FAQ which is linked to in the first sentence and antepenultimate paragraph has a different name than what the link says (I can imagine some users thinking they got the wrong link or something).

BTW I love these FAQs. They're simple and clear.

I noticed you spelled "colour" properly *g* the first usage in the 2nd faq, so I stole the "u" away from you.

I always have to remind myself "American spellingses!! American spellingses!" because I chose years ago to use *cough* correct ones instead. *g*

(I think I stole 2 commas as well, and rearranged a couple sentences. It's a disease ::tragic sigh::)

What, me? ::looks up from proofing the other faq:: Okay, you got me...

(But dark chocolate-fed rather than grass-fed, please and thank you *g*)

Always! In fact I think some homemade cocoa is calling my name right now.

(and I finished playing with #211)

Hmmm, okay, question on the first faq, #211.

It says "Ability to receive copies of comments you make in other journals in your email: This feature doesn't apply to paid communities. (However, admins can track all comments made in the community, and members of a paid community can track all comments made in the community.)"

Does the feature not apply because one just can't do it, or is it because one can't comment as a community in other journals?

I'm a big fan of not making people jump to another FAQ, so in the paid communities page, I strongly suggest a short list of what benefits they do get as well as the ones they don't get.

Also, the styles vs. skin page (scheme?), some pictures would be worth much verbiage. Screenshots would really really help.

Hmmmmmmm. Whenever someone says "Screenshots! Yay!" I get a twitch, since that's only useful for sighted users (although very useful for many). What about ... I don't even know if there's a word for it. Screenshots, yes, but also ... swatches? A section of the page, or a whole page, with a full-html/css preview of how it looks.

Good point, I bet HTML5 could make some kind of cool miniature version of the style, with HTML details options. Though I thought screenreaders prefer the Lynx no-clutter style theme and style=mine?

Quite OT

[personal profile] ninetydegrees 2010-09-11 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Denise, I don't know where to suggest this but someone's just left great feedback about what some users have problems with regarding styles and one thing which stood out is that a FAQ about font sizing would be nice. Maybe in the LJ quide and Journal Styles.
I quote: "One thing I have consistently seen is that the ZOMG HUGE TYPEFACES turn a lot of people off, because they don't know why the site is like that or that it can be changed in, like, ten seconds. I'd had my account for a couple years and had no idea about the px vs. em thing, why it was that way, and that I could make the type smaller by adjusting my browser default a couple points."
I know I've seen a couple Support requests on this topic too.

Other suggestion prompted by a question at getting_started: the LJ guide is fabulous but it's got no link. For example, Archive, Manage Circle, Reading filters are mentioned but not linked to.
