I think that the long term plan is to split off the menu structure from the schemes, so the schemes just have to point to the menu structure and updating that will update all the schemes.

For what it's worth, it's not a long-term plan - it's something that's almost ready to be committed into the code. (In actual fact, I think it *is* ready now and we're just waiting for a review.)
